The following dogs are at high risk at the Humboldt County Animal Shelter and need to go to rescue:
Picture | Description | |||||
Male | Black and Tricolor | German Shepherd Dog and Black and Tan Coonhound mix | 3 years old | He is a friendly and was temperament tested but failed for food aggression so will not be made available for adoption. He also is recovering from salmon poisoning but his spirits are high and he is a real happy dog.
Male | Brown brindle and white | Australian Shepherd mix | 5 months old | This friendly, brown brindle and white, male, Australian Shepherd mix is a curious and friendly little 5 mo. old pup. He suffers from mange and even though the vet could find no mites they still suspect he has sarcoptic mange.
RAQUEL (A059125) | Female | Brown and white | Queensland Heeler mix | 3 years old | Raquel is a sweet, gentle 3 yr. old Queensland Heeler mix that came to our shelter suffering from heart worm, lymes, Ehrlichia and possibly salmon poisoning. She has passed her temperament test but has not been made available for adoption because of her health issues. She is a perfect size at about 30 lbs.
Male | Brown brindle and white | Pit Bull Terrier | 1 year old | Pit boy friendly with people though he can be a bit guarded and barky when unsure. He failed his temperament for being dog aggressive. He wants to confront most dogs he passes while walking down kennel row. He will not be made available for adoption and has been offered to rescue to try to save his life.
BENTLEY (A058967) | Male | Black | Queensland Heeler mix | 3 years old | He is too timid in his kennel, so not offered up for adoption. He growls submissively in his kennel. Out of his kennel he is playful and happy go lucky. Just takes a bit to warm up. UPDATE: While it was thought he might need entropion surgery on his bottom eyelids, after an examination by a vet this turned out to be a simple infection which he was treated for. |
The following dogs are adoptable dogs at the Humboldt County Animal Shelter and have passed temperament but they are showing signs of kennel stress and desperately need to go to rescue/foster or adoption:
Picture | Description | |||||
VICKI (A058225) | Female | Black and tan | German Shepherd Dog mix | 6 years old | Sweet, gorgeous, lovely lady who is looking for a gentle, patient person to be her best friend. She and her daughter, Emma, arrived together a couple weeks ago. Both have had a very unstable life and have definitely not been treated well. Emma has been adopted; Vicki waits. She’s a sensitive, slender and hopeful girl who wants to give her heart over to a good friend. She just needs to have some time to learn that it is safe to do so. She is medium-sized.
COWBOY (A058251) | Male | Tricolor | Treeing Walker Coonhound mix | 3 years old | Cowboy is a loving, very handsome hound mix. He loves to play and be with people and he has a lot of pep and pizzazz. This stunningly handsome boy is a large-medium size and will need an active life with lots of attention and companionship. Give this guy the home he needs and he’ll be your best friend for life!
CAMERON | Male | White and brown | Pit Bull Terrier mix | 2 years old | Cameron is a very friendly, playful guy. He likes to play ball or chase after whatever is thrown. He is also a very affectionate boy that enjoys human contact and is content to relax while getting loves and pets from whoever wants to hang with him.
LALA | Female | Black and white | Pit Bull Terrier and Labrador Retriever | 11 months old | Lala came in with two of her look-alike sisters, was adopted, but then returned. She is displaying signs of kennel stress and depression after being adopted then returned to the shelter and desperately needs to be rescued. She loves to play with toys and being around people.

Hello, we are rescue coordinators with the Humboldt County Animal Shelter. Humboldt County is located on the California Coast - one County down from the Oregon border. Because of our remoteness we try to get the dogs as close to rescue as we can, and the shelter does not charge rescues that pull dogs - no matter how much they have financially invested in a dog.
The Humboldt County Animal Shelter and our emergency rescue/foster homes are VERY FULL. Through the efforts of the volunteers at the Humboldt County Animal Shelter there are dogs in the adoptable section that would otherwise not have a chance at adoption. We all know the stress kennel living puts on a dog and how important that extra contact and stimulation are in keeping a dog adoptable. We get the dogs out for walks and time in the playpen to remind them that they are dogs. The down side to this is that our Shelter is now crowded with adoptable dogs and when there is a crush of incoming hold dogs and space our adoptables are made available for rescue. The Shelter's adoptable dogs have passed a temperament test and are spayed/neutered, current on shots and micro-chipped. We can help with transportation of dogs taken by rescues. Thank you for hearing our plea. Please share it with anybody that may be able to help.
Thank you!
Stacie and Jim
